Isimila Stone

Deep within the Southern Highlands of Tanzania lies the Isimila Stone Age Site, a world-class archaeological treasure and geological marvel located just 20 kilometers south of Iringa town. Between 300,000 and 400,000 years ago, this dramatic landscape was a lush lake bed frequented by early human ancestors (Homo heidelbergensis). Today, centuries of heavy wind and water erosion have dried the lake and carved out a breathtaking canyon filled with towering, naturally sculpted sandstone pillars—some reaching heights of up to 30 meters—creating a dramatic backdrop reminiscent of a miniature Grand Canyon.

An absolute must-visit for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike, Isimila holds one of the richest collections of ancient Acheulean stone tools ever discovered. Visitors begin their journey at a small on-site museum displaying excavated artifacts and fossilized bones of extinct mammals, including a giant prehistoric relative of the modern hippopotamus. From there, a mandatory local guide leads a scenic 2-to-3-hour hike down into the gorge, where travelers can walk directly among the exposed toolbeds to see remarkably well-preserved stone hand axes, cleavers, and hammers resting exactly where ancient hunters left them.

Managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), the site is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and is easily accessible just off the main TANZAM highway. Entrance fees are budget-friendly at $10 USD for international adults and $5 USD for students, payable via credit card or mobile money at the gate. To get the most out of your itinerary, visit during the dry season from May to October, wear sturdy hiking shoes for the steep descent, and plan your walk for the early morning or late afternoon to secure the best photographic lighting and avoid the intense midday heat.
